Berger Paints Trinidad Limited
Advanced technology, innovative solutions
The genealogy of Berger Paints Trinidad Limited is as
colorful as the very paints and coatings that its many
customers have been using for years to brighten their
homes and buildings - adding even more lush shades
to the already vibrant and multi-hued islands of the
Caribbean.
The company takes its name from one Lewis Amelius
Christanus Adolphus Steigenberger, a German chem-
ist who moved from Frankfurt to London in the mid-
18th century, and, with his brother John, began setting
up shop as a “color maker.” Of particular importance
to Berger’s customers (Lewis had by that time short-
ened his name) as well as his own family’s income,
was Prussian blue, a deep, dark blue pigment that was
originally developed in Germany in the early 1700s.
Berger had perfected his own formula for the com-
pound and became famous for it throughout England
and beyond. Indeed, an order in 1772 from Dublin was
addressed to Lewis Berger, “Blue Maker.”
