we have. We’re not just a product that does the same
thing year on year.”
Scholey said that the attractiveness of Barbados, as
opposed to other Caribbean destination options, lies
in the diversity of the experiences available.
The Caribbean Tourism Organization said the country
had 376,716 tourist arrivals between January and Sep-
tember this year, ranking it No. 10 among 27 locales
that reported arrival statistics.
The number was down a fraction of 1 percent from the
same time period in 2013.
“For those who are looking for an authentic Caribbean
niche experience, Barbados is extremely attractive,”
Scholey said. “I have traveled the Caribbean exten-
sively, and it has always had an attraction to me. It
has a real mix of culture, beauty and sophistication.
It’s got an infrastructure that is much more developed
than many of the other islands, but it hasn’t been su-
persized and commercialized. There are very few high-
rises. It’s all about intimate and personal hotels where
