29 BUSINESS VIEW CARIBBEAN VOLUME 8, ISSUE 6 Alten Energy was founded by then recent college graduates Jean David, Ibrahim Fehmi and Yamil Pagan in 2010 to help residential and commercial customers in Puerto Rico reduce electricity costs while supporting the island’s transition to renewable energy. Puerto Rico has been historically an importer of fossil fuels for utilization at the utility’s old electricity generation plants. It is also known that the utility is bankrupt, and the transmission and distribution system has been hit by hurricanes, earthquakes, political instability, and poor maintenance. The company has since expanded its service offering into multiple states in the United States and expanded into industrial clients such as pharmaceutical or manufacturing companies to healthcare customers, having completed hundreds of projects between Puerto Rico and the United States. As a comprehensive energy solutions company, with over 200 MW of installed projects, a 2019 Top Solar Contractor by Solar Power World Magazine–Alten Energy is primarily a Developer, Engineering, Procurement and Construction shop dedicated to meeting its clients’ energy needs with its Turnkey Solutions or Power Purchase Agreements reducing electricity costs up to 50% when compared to the utility rate in the island. Amongst the company’s most emblematic recent achievements are: • The completion of a portfolio of over 40 micro-grids including solar and energy storage systems surpassing 2.5 MW of rooftop projects and 5 MWh in batteries donated to schools of Puerto Rico’s Department of Education by the American Red Cross. The micro-grids are energizing critical loads at each of the schools that every year are used as shelters during the hurricane season. • Supporting the construction of a 62 MW solar facility in Central Florida. • Building the first Community Solar + Storage project with a PV capacity of 1 MW on a rooftop and 1 MWh in batteries in Sterling, Massachusetts. • Development, Engineering, Procurement and Construction of a 1.3 MW ground mounted solar project with 1.5 MWh in batteries that will support the operation of an LNG existing co- generation system at a pharmaceutical company’s facilities in Canovanas, Puerto Rico. • Development, Engineering, Procurement and Construction of a 2.3 MW solar project in Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico. • The relocation and retrofit of a rooftop solar system for San Patricio Shopping Center, part of Empresas Caparra. Since Alten Energy’s inception the goal has been to support the island and our customers in their transition to affordable, cleaner, and resilient energy. The goal remains the same, now more experienced. ...... For more information, please visit our website www.altenenergy.us
