“The land there, which I had been acquiring over 17
years in small parcels, was to be the site of my family’s
home,” he says. “Returning to Dominica from overseas
with my wife and children in 2009 and with architec-
tural drawings in hand from my father-in-law, the plan
was to begin construction of our home in 2010/11.
However, the house design was too large for the par-
ticular area that we had intended to build it on, and it
would have required some level of change to the pris-
tine and natural landscape - which was against our
aim of preservation. We therefore scaled down the de-
sign for the home and decided to build much smaller
structures and integrate them into the environment
with minimal impact. That is when the idea of a bou-
tique resort was born. Construction finally began in
February 2010 and was completed in June 2011, with
just four villas and bungalows built. We have since ex-
