The progress at Martin’s Plumbing & Maintenance Services shows no signs of stopping.

The company was formed by Martin and Debra Philbert in 1978, and business began as a two-person venture out of a small office on Saddle Road in Maraval – a northern suburb of Trinidad & Tobago’s capital city, Port of Spain. As corporate growth arrived, the business transitioned from sole trader to limited liability status, and was relabeled Martin’s Plumbing & Maintenance Services Ltd. in 1984.

A 30-plus year veteran of the construction industry, Martin Philbert holds a sanitary constructor’s license issued by the national Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) and has been involved with multiple major projects. His determination and drive has yielded steady growth for MPMS, which has transitioned into incrementally larger operating spaces through the years before most recently settling into company-owned premises in an industrial park in Arima, the country’s fourth-largest city.

The new facility sits on a full acre of land and houses offices, a large warehouse and garage/parking facilities for a fleet of vehicles. The administrative team includes directors, a human resources manager, an executive secretary, a company secretary, an officer manager, an accounting supervisor and clerks, a materials/inventory clerk, a messenger/courier and a receptionist.

The MPMS plumbing contracting and technical team includes a licensed sanitary contractor tenders department, technical director, civil engineer, project manager, site supervisors, certified plumbers, skilled workmen, welder, mason and an on-site labor force. The plumbing maintenance team also includes an operations manager, supervisors, certified plumbers, laborers and trainees, and also houses all plumbing materials, tools, heavy and light equipment, camera-testing equipment, smoke-testing equipment, snake machines and full equipment maintenance panel vans.

The company’s vast roster of services includes plumbing tendering, mechanical, civil and technical designs, internal & external plumbing designs and installation, removal of existing plumbing for industrial, commercial and residential sectors, supply and analysis of isometric and as-built drawings, supply and installation of portable and waste water systems, bathroom and sanitary fixtures, technical advice, construction and design of filter beds, sewer systems facilities, new and innovative aerobic treatment plants and ultra-violet systems, obtaining of WASA approvals, camera and smoke testing and supply and installation of all sanitary fixtures, water pumps, sewer and sludge pumps and water heaters.

“During the years, we have built relationships with several major sanitary fixtures manufacturers, and we have been chosen by the Eljer and Wavin companies to be sole distributors in Trinidad & Tobago for their exclusive line of products,” Philbert said. “Our experienced and educated staff can answer any questions about any of our services or products. Maintenance services include clearing and unclogging of sewer lines, manholes, grease traps, toilets and sinks, repairing of burst water mains and pipes, taps and faucets, servicing of taps, faucets, sanitary fixture, water pumps, sewer and sludge pumps and water heaters, repairs to portable lines from one-half inch, repairs to sewer lines from one-and-one-half inches, cleaning of water tanks, preventative maintenance and emergency services, maintaining of sewer treatment plant(s), high maintenance services and schedules, sewer treatment, operation and maintenance of sewer plants and treatment facilities, replacing of sludge pumps, servicing and installation of pumps, weekly preventative maintenance and emergency services, desludging of treatment plants, upgrading of sewer treatment plants and vacuum and jetter equipment. Site visits can be conducted if required, and costs for services are based on volume, requirements and materials.

MPMS has amassed a significant client roster over the years, and its existing base now includes Prestige Holdings, National GAS Company, Beaver Construction, Endeavour Holdings Limited, Ameara Group, RBC Bank Limited, First Citizen Bank Limited, Marriott Hotel, Premier Properties, Invaders Land Limited, Mouttet Capital Limited, Servus Limited, Lindas Bakery Group, Trincity Commercial Group, Zanzi Bar and the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission.

Existing projects that MPMS is working on include the Abel Londonville Brick Factory, Yuffee’s Store Chaguanas and Arthur Lock Jack’s Residence. Past projects have been completed on both Trinidad and Tobago, and at many sites across the Caribbean region, including the St. Kitts National Stadium in 1998, the Grenada national football and cricket stadiums in 2001, three KFC branches in Grenada and three more in the Dominican Republic.
